Pre-Season Outlook
If Ekeler can recapture some of his pre-2023 form then he could be in a good bounce back spot with Washington, where he signed a two-year, $11.43 million deal this offseason. Whether Ekeler can accomplish that might first depend on the question of whether the 29-year-old runner is dealing with any physical decline. It's possible that Ekeler's down 2023 season had more to do with his early-season high ankle sprain and the general collapse of the Chargers offense, and the Commanders are betting on that explanation rather than decline. Ekeler is unlikely to do much running with Brian Robinson and Chris Rodriguez around, but he should still stay involved on draw plays and should claim a near monopoly of the passing-down work to be had in the Commanders backfield. Just as importantly, giving Ekeler fewer carries suits him better anyway since part of his struggles with the Chargers involved breakdowns from overuse.

Ekeler is signing a two-year contract with the Commanders, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The deal reportedly is worth up to $11.43 million, but with only $4.82 million guaranteed in the first season and a significant portion being incentives. Ekeler turns 29 in May and is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he experienced a massive downturn from his 2021-22 production while dealing with a high-ankle sprain and poor blocking. Ekeler rushed the ball 10 times for 11 yards in Sunday's 13-12 loss to the Chiefs. He added seven receptions on eight targets for 38 yards.
